The Real Story Behind Cocoa and a Healthier Alternative

I’ve got some truth to share today about something most of us love—cocoa. Yeah, the stuff in your favorite chocolate bar. The food industry has done a pretty good job of selling us on the idea that all cocoa is good cocoa. But let me tell you, there's a big difference between the junk they push and the real deal.

The Dark Side of the Cocoa Industry

Let's get real for a minute. The food industry has been feeding us unhealthy cocoa products for years, sneaking them into our diets from a young age. They load these products with sugar, unhealthy fats, and a bunch of other additives that do nothing but harm our bodies. Why? Because it keeps us coming back for more, keeping their pockets fat while our health takes a hit.

Did you know that heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. for over a century? Despite this, more than half of U.S. adults are unaware of this scary fact. And it’s not just heart disease—obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are rampant too. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, poor diet is a major culprit. It’s no coincidence that these health issues align with the rise of processed, unhealthy foods like the commercial “chocolate” most of you already know.

Obesity

The Ugly Truth About American Health

- 60% of adults in the U.S. don’t know heart disease is the leading cause of death.

- Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined.

- On average, someone dies of cardiovascular disease every 36 seconds in the U.S.

- About 697,000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease in 2020 – that's 1 in every 5 deaths.

And let’s not forget about the icing on the cake: obesity. Almost 40% of American adults are obese. Not overweight, but obese. That’s a direct result of the junk that the food industry keeps pushing our way. High cholesterol and high blood pressure are just part of the package.

Cocoa Beans

Enter: Black Forest’s SUPER Cocoa with 98% Flavonoids

Now, I’m not just here to preach doom and gloom. I’ve got some good news too. We at Black Forest Supplements have been on a mission to find the best cocoa in the world. And guess what? We did.

We created cocoa flavanols to counteract the heart health crisis in our country. Not even the crooks at the FDA could argue against its potential. But after much painstaking thought, we felt a strong need to push our boundaries even further. If we are going to make a change, it has to be A BIG CHANGE.

It’s for this reason that we’ve completely revamped our cocoa to introduce a new alternative, packed with the same benefits of cocoa flavanols we all know and love, and put together with new compounds that’ll knock your socks off.

So, what’s so special about our new cocoa? It all comes down to two key components: flavonoids and -epicatechin.

The Magic of -Epicatechin

-Epicatechin, one of the main flavanols in cocoa, transforms into metabolites that keep your blood pressure and flow in check, acting as powerful antioxidants. They help maintain cardiovascular health, something most commercial cocoa products can’t do.

Our process is different because we guarantee 150mg of -epicatechin in our formula. A patented technique that preserves natural flavanols from the bean to the finished product, ensuring you get the highest possible levels and maximum health benefits; fresh from the grain — boosted with -epicatechin.

The Power of Flavonoids

Right, let’s break it down. We still have 1200mg of good ol’ flavanols (from cocoa flavanols 12X). However, this new formula now includes an extra 600mg of a 98% pure flavonoids mix.

Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients found in many fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. Our flavanols belong to a “flavonoid family”, and are primarily known for cardiovascular benefits like improving blood vessel function, reducing blood pressure, and enhancing blood flow.

This new formula for Super Cocoa not only offers the same cardiovascular benefits as before, but now includes a BOOSTED MIX of flavonoids to include a wide range of health benefits never seen before in a cocoa product. To say the least, here’s what research claims about flavonoids:

The Breathtaking Benefits

  • Antioxidant Properties: Flavonoids fight off free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, protecting your cells from damage (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2000).

  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: They help reduce inflammation in the body, easing chronic conditions and pain (Nutrients journal, 2016).

  • Cardiovascular Health: Flavonoids support heart health by improving blood vessel function and reducing blood pressure (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2011).

  • Immune System Support: These compounds boost the body's defenses, helping you fend off illnesses (Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, 2020).

  • Anti-cancer Properties: Flavonoids have the potential to reduce the risk of certain cancers by inhibiting cancer cell growth (Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, 2003).

  • Hormone Balance and Menopausal Symptom Management: They help manage hormone-related issues, providing relief from menopausal symptoms on women (The Journal of Nutrition, 2003).

  • Bone Health Support: Flavonoids enhance bone density and strength, supporting overall skeletal health (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2014).

  • Neuroprotective Effects: They protect against neurodegenerative diseases and improve cognitive function, keeping your brain sharp (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2008).

  • Anti-diabetic Effects: Flavonoids help regulate blood sugar levels, aiding in diabetes management (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2006).

  • Eye Health Support: These compounds protect against age-related macular degeneration, preserving your vision (Journal of Ophthalmology, 2010).

  • Skin Health Improvement: Flavonoids protect against UV damage and improve skin hydration, keeping your skin healthy and glowing (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2018).

  • Anti-obesity Effects: They influence fat metabolism and help manage weight, supporting a healthy body composition (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2013).

Probably a dumb question, but does your cocoa powder have low or no levels of heavy metals? I ask because when I googled if it was possible to make dark chocolate bars with no heavy metals (like lead and cadmium, which are apparently found naturally even in the beans, due to environmental absorption), the AI said no (which I call bs on). I’ve seen the pages for your other products and how they’re rigorously tested for heavy metals and other harmful contaminants, but there isn’t one on the cocoa flavonols page. I just wanna be sure it is really safe.

What is the difference between flavonoids and flavanols?

Flavanols and flavonoids, while both beneficial plant compounds, have distinct roles. Flavanols, found mainly in cocoa, enhance heart health by improving blood circulation. Flavonoids offer broad antioxidant benefits, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Together, they synergistically amplify these effects, boosting overall cardiovascular and immune health.

What are flavonoids?

Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients found in fruits, vegetables, and cocoa beans, known for their powerful antioxidant properties.

They can be found naturally in chocolate, for example, but achieving its full potential and truly benefiting, requires it to be consumed through a High Flavanols Cocoa Powder drink like Black Forest Cocoa.

3 ingredient hot cocoa mix?

A basic 3-ingredient hot cocoa mix uses unsweetened cocoa powder (Like Black Forest Cocoa), sugar, and powdered milk.

Just stir the ingredients together and store them in a jar; mix a few spoonfuls with hot water or milk whenever you want a quick cup of cocoa.

Furthermore, if you want even more flavor you can add a banana or a tablespoon of peanut butter.

Can you make cookies with cocoa powder?

Yes! Cocoa powder is commonly used to make highly delicious and nutritious brownies. It gives a deep chocolate taste without adding extra fat, and works especially well to make healthy recipes for brownies and cookies.

What is hot cocoa powder?

Hot cocoa powder is a pre-sweetened mix of cocoa, sugar, and often dried milk, designed to dissolve in hot water or milk for instant hot chocolate.

Processing the cocoa as these brands do may reduce flavanols (antioxidants supporting heart and brain health).

For richer flavor & a high level, healthy & nutritious cocoa mix, use Black Forest Cocoa, with your desired add-ons to get a healthy delicious drink.

Can I make chocolate using cocoa powder?

Yes! You can make chocolate by whisking cocoa powder with melted cocoa butter, sugar, and a touch of vanilla.

For a milk chocolate version, add milk powder before tempering or chilling the mixture. The result is firm, homemade chocolate you can break into bars or use in recipes.*

For a rich, vibrant flavor, try Black Forest Cocoa. It delivers 600mg flavanols (antioxidants for heart and brain health) to elevate your homemade chocolate’s flavor and health.*

How do I make chocolate from cocoa powder?

For vibrant flavor and wellness, use Black Forest Cocoa. It delivers 600mg flavanols (antioxidants for heart and brain health) to elevate your homemade chocolate.*

Does cocoa powder have caffeine?

Yes. Cocoa powder naturally contains caffeine, though in smaller amounts than coffee.

A tablespoon has about 10–12 mg of caffeine, compared to 95 mg in a standard cup of coffee.

It also contains theobromine, a related stimulant that provides a gentler, longer-lasting energy lift.*

For flavanol benefits without caffeine, Black Forest Cocoa offers 600mg per serving, caffeine-free.

What does “cocoa powder equivalent” mean?

“Cocoa powder equivalent” refers to how much cocoa powder is needed to replace chocolate in recipes.

Since baking chocolate contains cocoa solids plus cocoa butter, the swap has to be adjusted for fat and sugar.

For example, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder plus 1 tablespoon of fat can replace 1 ounce of unsweetened baking chocolate.*

For high flavanols—antioxidants supporting heart and brain health, try Black Forest Cocoa Powder Available here!

What is dark cocoa powder?

Dark cocoa powder is a more heavily dutched cocoa with a deeper color and less acidic, smoother chocolate taste.*

It’s perfect for rich desserts and delicious shakes. Dutching reduces flavanols (antioxidants for heart and brain health).

For bold taste and wellness, Black Forest Cocoa offers 600mg of flavanols per serving.

Does cocoa powder go bad?

Cocoa powder doesn’t truly spoil but lasts 2–3 years in a cool, dry place.

After that timeframe, it can potentially lose flavor and flavanols over time, which are the antioxidants supporting heart and brain health.

For sustained potency, Black Forest Cocoa ensures a 2.5–3 year shelf life (largest in the market) with high-potency flavanols for wellness benefits. Available here!

Cacao powder vs cocoa powder?

Cacao powder, from raw beans, retains more flavanols (antioxidants supporting heart health) due to minimal processing.

Cocoa powder, made from roasted beans, offers a smoother flavor but may lose some flavanols.

For health-focused baking, Black Forest Cocoa Powder delivers high-potency flavanols for cardiovascular and cognitive benefits.
